Will the Real Peter Leeds Please Stand Up?

If it weren’t for the shared name, I would have never known about “the other” Peter Leeds. This fact was a little surprising to me as I learned more about him, considering that I’ve probably seen him dozens of times over the years without even realizing it.

You see, Peter Leeds was an actor who appeared on television, Broadway, and movies from the 1940’s until the 1970’s. He worked with notable celebrities such as Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Carol Burnett, and many more.

His movie credits included The Scarface Mob (1962), 8 on the Lam (1967), and Dragnet (1987), among others. Add to this his numerous radio work and television show appearances, as well as his USO tours with Bob Hope, and Peter Leeds was known to millions.

While I certainly wouldn’t have seen the majority of his work, and in fact I wasn’t even alive during his heyday, there is no doubt that I’ve seen him in action on a few occasions. All the while I watched, there was no way for me to recognize that we has the identical name.

If I ever read the credits at the end of movies or television shows, which I don’t, and which hardly anyone ever does, then maybe a “Peter Leeds” rolling by would have caught my attention.

Now, considering we’re in the age of Google, and name recognition is a big part of being The Penny Stock Professional, how can I possibly stand out when the other Peter Leeds has long been world famous? In fact, before I even entered this world, he was already known to millions.

In addition, the Internet age means that searches for just about any name returns hundreds of possible matches, or millions.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of room for two, or five, or even 50 people of the same name. It’s not about jostling for position. Rather, it’s about establishing an online presence so that interested customers can easily find you when they want to. Being the 11th result on Google for a search term is not much better than being 200th. However, making in into the top 10, or even the top 3, suddenly puts you into some prime “real estate.”

Part of what we’ve done to this end, while also giving our followers an additional touch-point to our brand, is through an online Peter Leeds group. It helps increase our visibility, so we can avoid being buried beneath the presence of the much more widely known actor.

This was simply a way for us to turn the Internet effect on it’s head. While the information age means there’s more of everything, including search results and people doing the searching, it also has allowed us a way to rise above the activity. With popular Social Media tools like Facebook, you become one of the options when people are looking for you.

While there are more choices for them to select between, as they try to track down the specific Peter Leeds they are looking for, you can rest assured that the vast majority, if not the total majority, never would have heard about you at all, if not for the Internet.

This holds true in terms of my personal situation, but it is also applicable to any personality, or even any individual, who seeks to create their own identity online.
